Prabal Gurung for Olivia Palermo

Rain or snow, New York Fashion Week is in full swing and here is the first of my show reviews for the season at

An Army of One, a fully embellished female exuberating her inner strength on the arm of her sleeve, the heel of her armoresque boots, and the fur of her lapel stood center stage at Prabal Gurung’s Fall 2013 show at the St. John’s Center in New York City yesterday.

The collection’s inspiration stemmed from the “Gurkha Army and the dichotomy of military uniforms – the formality, the decorated soldier, and particularly the attitude and strength of female soldiers.”  According to Gurung, “Military uniforms are one of the best examples of form and function coming together. We even used hand-embroidery and Swarovski Crystal in a regimented, almost digital way.”

His leading ladies marched in and out of the cold, cement warehouse confidently exhibiting their stretch wool suiting and cut-out silk crepe dresses in standard troop hues of olive green and navy blue.  Prints popped in and out of the collection starting with crimson, floral embroidered brocades which transitioned into metallic, patched stripes and finished with softer floral silk notations.  Nonetheless, Gurung found a way to edge out his looks by layering leather harnesses designed in collaboration with Zana Bayne.

Perhaps Gurung’s true badge of honor came in the form of shiny gold, multi-buckled, embellished heels and sectioned mid-thigh high boots.  His continued footwear collaboration with Casadei seems to be giving all these female cadets something to write home about.
